With support through the Alpkit Foundation and Continuum, donated outdoor equipment was put back into use to help others access impactful experiences with Positive Steps Outdoors.
When outdoor kit is pushed to the back of the cupboard, forgotten about, or simply not needed any more, then it's adventures may appear to be fading. The wonderful thing about Continuum is that it's helping geting it used again in positive ways. No more so than when it can be seen helping others access outdoor activities and the benefits this brings. One such project we had the pleasure of helping recently and a fantastic example of how these donations are back out making a real difference, was with Postivie Steps Outdoors.
They are a social enterprise based in Northern Ireland that we've previously supported through the Alpkit Foundation and Continuum. They work to promote positive mental and physical wellbeing with preventative steps through green therapy and spending time outdoors. This time through January and February they were looking to deliver a programme of five guided hikes to Divis and Black Mountain, in partnership with Storehouse Belfast.
Their director Alan Elwood got in touch to tell us about the project and we were pleased to be able to pass on some donated Continuum kit, from rucksacks, boots and a range of clothing to help with these healthy hikes.
"Funded by the Public Health Agency through the Clear Project, this initiative is focused on providing people from disadvantaged communities, including refugees and asylum seekers, with the opportunity to experience the great outdoors, improve their wellbeing, and form new friendships.
After they had completed the series of walks, Alan got back in touch to let us know how things had gone and the impact it made, with a total of 52 participants had taken part through the hikes.
“I’m thankful for meeting new people and making new friends.”
"Each hike began at Storehouse Belfast, where participants gathered to be briefed on the day ahead. Thanks to the support of the Alpkit Foundation, everyone was kitted out with essential outdoor gear, ensuring they could take part comfortably regardless of the weather conditions. Without this vital equipment, many participants would not have been able to join the walks and benefit from the experience."
It's really special to hear how something like Continuum can be used to powerfull effect when combined with initiatives like this is. To clearly see the difference that these walks have had and demonstrates how spending time outside and through the support of suitable clothing and equipment that many may struggle to access, can make a positive and direct impact on peoples lives.
"An incredible 64% reported an improvement in their wellbeing after each walk, measured using the Warwick Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale. These hikes weren’t just about physical activity – they were an opportunity for learning, connection, and mindfulness. Along the way, participants discovered the area’s rich history, flora, and fauna. Guided mindfulness exercises equipped them with practical techniques to manage stress and improve mental resilience, promoting positive mental health that extends far beyond the hike itself."
“It was a fantastic experience. I feel like I recharged myself with positive energies and am refreshed. It was very good.”
