Sigma mono monomer waterproof the sign of things to come

By Kenny Stocker

Sigma is made from 100% post-consumer waste recycled polyester, which is fully recyclable at the end of its life, thanks to its single-material construction. Its PFC-free durable water repellent coating ensures eco-friendly performance

The Great Outdoors gear team doesn’t hand out accolades lightly, so when Kirsty Pallas awarded our Sigma 3 layer waterproof their Best in Test, we got a little excited. But it didn't stop there. Even more impressively Sigma also picked up the Greener Choice badge, acknowledging our sustainability efforts.

Kirsty was quick to highlight that 100% recycled materials form the core of this three-season hardshell, and it’s also designed to be recyclable at the end of its life. That puts it amongst a very select few in the waterproof jacket world.

How to make a winning waterproof jacket

Right off the bat, the lightweight feel suggested the jackets intended use; a go-to shell for climbing, walking, mountaineering and biking adventures. It packs small and doesn’t weigh you down — exactly what you want in a versatile waterproof.

“I really like the fit and feel of the jacket. It’s neat without being overly tight, and it has a flexible feel, in part due to not using a Gore-Tex membrane.” – Kirsty Pallas, The Great Outdoors

Instead of Gore-Tex, we use a proprietary waterproof membrane with a PFC-free DWR coating. This keeps the jacket soft and flexible, making movement easier and comfort levels higher. And in true British hill conditions, Kirsty reported that the Sigma stood up to rain, snow, and wind without issue.

Other Features That Stood Out:

  • Low-profile fit – Not bulky, layers well.
  • Large hand pockets – OS-map friendly and roomy for gloves/snacks.
  • Hood with wired peak & volume adjuster – Keeps rain out, even in foul weather.
  • Elasticated cuffs & hem drawcord – Adds flexibility to fit and layering.

Finding something to critique

It wouldn't be a well rounded review without finding some room for improvement. Kirsty found that the bottom of the generous glove and map sized pockets sat slightly too low for her, the semi-elasticated cuffs aren’t ideal for thick winter gloves and the hood is a tight squeeze over a climbing helmet. We don't see these as major flaws, we have other jackets more suited to winter mountaineering.

A sign of things to come

We are so proud of what we have achieved with Sigma. It’s light, comfortable, properly waterproof, and designed with sustainability in mind —a rare feat in a category dominated by Gore-Tex giants.

Yes, we have more suitable choices for full-on winter mountaineering, but for fast-and-light adventures, hillwalking, and multi-sport use, it’s spot on. The fact that it’s also an eco-conscious purchase just makes it even more tantalising.
