A Runner's Guide to Lighting

A Runner's Guide to Lighting

By Kenny Stocker

As a runner you need to put your safety first. Whether navigating urban streets or exploring the countryside by night we will show you the best solutions to see and be seen.

As the days grow shorter and the nights lengthen, runners face an interesting challenge: maintaining their passion in the face of diminishing daylight. Whether you're pounding the pavement in urban areas or exploring rugged trails, proper lighting isn't just a convenience—it's a crucial safety measure that can make the difference between an invigorating run and getting lost in the bogs.

Visibility on the road

Even if you are heading into the wild places, you may have to navigate the roads. For road runners, the primary concern during darker months is visibility, i.e. being seen. Even in well-lit urban areas, car drivers may struggle to see you, especially during twilight hours or in poor weather.

Reflective gear is a good start, but active lighting takes your safety to the next level. A good running light not only helps you see where you're going but, more importantly, helps others see you.

Handheld torches, chest-mounted lights, or even simple clip-on LEDs can also significantly increase your visibility to motorists, cyclists, and other pedestrians. These lights create a moving point of reference that catches the eye more effectively than static reflectors.

Lighting up the trail

For trail runners, lighting serves a dual purpose. Not only does it make you more visible to others, but it's also essential for navigating the unpredictable terrain of off-road trail. Roots, rocks, tussocks, sudden dips, and wildlife, they are all out to get you. Although they pose a significant hazard in low-light conditions, it can easily be solved with a powerful, well-positioned light that can illuminate obstacles, allowing you to react quickly and maintain your pace with confidence.

Moreover, trail running in autumn and winter often means dealing with rapidly changing weather conditions. Fog, rain, or early dusk can dramatically reduce visibility, making a reliable light source not just helpful, but necessary for orientation and safety.

Extending your running window

Good lighting doesn't just keep you safe—it expands your running possibilities. With the right setup, you're no longer constrained by daylight hours. Early morning runs before work or evening sessions after a long day become not just possible, but enjoyable. This flexibility is invaluable for maintaining consistency in your training schedule.

Confidence in the dark

Running in low-light conditions can be intimidating, especially on unfamiliar routes. Good lighting provides a sense of security and confidence, allowing you to focus on your run rather than worrying about what might be lurking in the shadows. This mental comfort can lead to more relaxed, enjoyable, and ultimately more productive training sessions.

Recharge

As runners, we often have a deep appreciation for the environment. When choosing lighting solutions, it's worth considering their environmental impact. Rechargeable torches reduce battery waste, and these days have a burntime to match all but the longest runs or mountain marathons. In these cases a compact lithium powerbank can boost the range to stretch over several days.

Don't get caught out in the dark

In the autumn and winter months, appropriate lighting should not be seen as an optional extra—it's an essential piece of kit. Whether you're navigating city streets or remote trails, the right torch can keep you safe, extend your running hours, boost your confidence, and enhance your overall running experience.

Keep running safely through the darker months.
