One of the best things about waxed cotton is how well it ages. Over time, your bag will soften, develop a unique patina, and tell the story of every adventure you’ve taken it on. But just like a good pair of boots, a little care goes a long way in keeping it performing at its best.
Here’s our step-by-step guide to cleaning and reproofing your waxed cotton bag.
What You’ll Need
- 2 brushes (one for dry cleaning, one for wet cleaning)
- Cloth
- Toothbrush (or canvas brush)
- Warm soapy water (use a clear, gentle soap)
- Trakke Reproofing Spray
Step 1: Dry Clean First
Before introducing any water, brush off loose dirt and mud with a dry brush or cloth. Getting rid of excess debris now makes the rest of the process much easier.
Step 2: Wash with Warm Soapy Water
Using clear soap (as coloured soap can stain the fabric) and warm water, gently scrub the bag with your second brush. Work the lather into the fabric, taking care not to soak it through.
Step 3: Get into the Details
Dirt loves to hide in seams and corners. Use a toothbrush or small canvas brush to reach those awkward spots and give your bag a thorough clean.
Step 4: Air Dry
When you’re satisfied, leave the bag to air dry completely for at least 24 hours. Avoid direct heat sources - let it dry naturally.
Step 5: Reproof with Wax
Hold your Trakke Reproofing Spray around 3–5cm away from the fabric and apply an even coat across the entire bag. Don’t be alarmed by the temporary white film - it disappears once dry.
Step 6: Leave to Cure
Allow the bag to dry for another 24 hours. Once cured, your waxed cotton will be refreshed, water-repellent, and ready for many more adventures.
How Often Should You Reproof?
We recommend reproofing your bag every 9–12 months, depending on how much use it gets. Heavy rain, salt air, and regular wear can shorten that cycle.
A Final Note
Waxed cotton is tough – but avoid putting your bag in the washing machine as this can damage and remove the waxed coating from the fabric.
