Katie is an artist and amateur marine conservationist who moved from London to the Isle of Skye in 2015 in pursuit of a lifestyle more in tune with the natural world. She has been described by The Times newspaper as a ‘serial castaway’ having spent much of her new life searching for new ways to unplug from modern life and spend more time off-grid (which she acknowledges isn’t easy to do when running an art business and ocean activism needs to be mostly done online!).

Her largest off-grid adventures include having lived in the woods for a year and being cut-off from society for Channel 4’s ‘Eden: Paradise Lost’. Her favourite challenge was later spending almost 6 weeks alone without human contact on the Shiant Isles, a wild and wind-bashed uninhabited archipelago teeming with seabirds, where she says every day felt like being in a nature documentary (which made up for the constant rain and gales!) Katie is a Get Outside Champion for Ordnance Survey and her latest project in conjunction with that involves visiting all 82 of GB’s largest islands (over 5km2). With this she aims to promote Leave No Trace and to encourage visitors to slow down and get to know each island rather than just tick places off a list. In being a BDMLR marine mammal medic and Surfers Against Sewage regional rep, Katie will also be doing a mini beach clean on each island, as well as bivvying for at least one night and wild swimming on each. You can follow her travels on her Daring Deeds.

Career Highlights

  • 38 days castaway without human contact on an uninhabited rocky island
  • 365 days spent living off-grid in the woods (and every night spent on an Alpkit Dozer mattress!)
  • 5 years on the Isle of Skye after swapping London life for something with more fresh air!
  • 82 islands: her current project to visit all of Great Britain’s islands over 5km square promoting responsible travelling whilst beach cleaning, swimming and bivvying on each
