Lightweight waterproof trousers

Parallax waterproof trousers are the Editors lightweight choice

By Kenny Stocker

Trek and Mountain compare our Parallax waterproof trousers against eight of the best lightweight waterproof trousers for summer hillwalking.

With the likes of Arc'teryx, Patagonia and Rab in the test we were very pleased to get Editors Choice.

They say

In their article, T&M highlight the Parallax Trousers as the least expensive option in their test, noting their popularity as a lightweight, packable solution for unexpected showers. Despite their low price, these trousers are the lightest in the test, with a women's size medium weighing only 195g. Made from a 2.5-layer fabric with taped seams, they boast a waterproof rating of 20,000mm hydrostatic head.

T&M appreciate the soft and comfortable fabric, though they mention that it can feel slightly clammy inside. However, they have not experienced any stickiness, even on hot days, and find the trousers decently breathable. The trousers are extremely packable, folding down to the size of a grapefruit.

The article also points out that the 'half-length' zips, though shorter than expected, still make it easy to put the trousers on over boots. An adjustable Velcro tab at the ankle cuffs keeps the zips secure, and the elasticated waist with a draw cord adjuster ensures a good fit.

Overall, T&M commend the Alpkit Parallax Trousers for offering superb value for money, being the lightest in the test, and packing down very well.

We say

At the time of this review Parallax were available at £95.99 (RRP £119.99), so available at even greater value than normal.

Bearing that in mind, even at full price, they would still be £20 less expensive than their closest rival the Patagonia Torrentshell 3L.

They are also lightest in test, some 140 grams lighter than the £200 more expensive Arc'teryx Alpha Pants, an important consideration for lightweight summer hillwalking trousers, where you hope that are going to spend most of their time in your bag.

The full review 'Group Test: Lightweight Walking Trousers' is published in the June/July (Issue 122) edition of the magazine.
