Join us at Alpkit Ilkley on October 11th for a practical navigation course led by store hero Emma.
This practical course will focus on how maps relate to the land around you, enabling you to plot routes, visualise what’s ahead and avoid feeling lost.
The course will cover the key aspects of map reading, namely setting, contours and scale, as well as basic use of the compass; you’ll be applying your skills as we go, confidently plotting our way through open countryside.
The walk route will depend on the ability of the group and may be up to 8 miles long. The instructor for the course will be store hero Emma who is also a fully qualified and very experienced mountain leader. The course will start and end at the Alpkit store in Ilkley.
There will be some snacks and beverages provided in store on the day but it may be recommended to bring a water bottle or flask of hot tea/coffee to keep you warm. A decent jacket and wet weather clothes are also recommended as the chill of autumn will be in full swing by October. Other items you will need are a compass and the map for the local area (OS Map 297).
Minimum age: 12 years. Under 15s must be accompanied by parent or guardian (max 3 children per parent/guardian)
